In the pantheon of infamous tech quotes, IBM founder Thomas Watson’s “I think there is a world market for maybe five computers” is more like “Play it again, Sam.” Just like the most famous quote never said in “Casablanca” it’s false – no one’s ever been able to prove Watson uttered the words.
USA Today tech writer Kevin Maney takes a look at the most famous IT quotes and finds only one of the following isn’t fiction:
- “This ‘telephone’ has too many shortcomings to be seriously considered as a means of communication.” – William Orton, president of Western Union
- “Everything that can be invented has been invented.” – Charles Duell, U.S. Patent Commissioner
- “Who the hell wants to hear actors talk?” – Harry Warner, Warner Bros.
- “There is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home.” – Ken Olsen, founder of Digital
“640K ought to be enough for anybody.” – Bill Gates
