A Louisiana city is taking on BellSouth, saying if the carrier won’t bring fiber to every home and business, the town will do so itself.
BellSouth says it has offered to bring fiber to the curb in Lafayette within in four years, but the city says that’s just not good enough.
“They’re trying to defend and sell a horse-and-buggy technology in a supersonic age,” city official Joey Durel says.
Residents are scheduled to vote this weekend on whether the city can sell bonds to finance its broadband project.
Durel also contends BellSouth and local cable company Cox Communications have been vigorously fighting Lafayette’s DIY project.
“Assuming we win [this weekend’s vote], we are expecting a lawsuit,” he says. “Everything BellSouth does is a delay tactic.”
