Another story on that study notes that those who talk on their phones while driving (regardless of hands-free use) are four times more likely to be involved in an accident. Researchers say those using hands-free sets had a 3.8 higher chance of an accident, while those driving phone-to-ear had a 4.9 raised risk.
Even worse, officials say that the myth that “hands-free” means “safer” could perpetuate more accidents.
“If this new technology actually increases mobile phone use in cars, it could contribute to even more crashes. At least in the short term, it seems likely that mobile phone use in cars will continue to grow, despite the growing evidence of the risk it creates,” says lead researcher Dr. Suzanne McEvoy.
