When we say “ATM” here at NW.com, you know we’re not talking cash money. And when we type “SCSI” you not only know what it is, but also how to pronounce it. ‘Cause you’re cool that way.
But, given the somewhat insular nature of what we do, it’s easy to forget that not everyone knows what the we’re talking about, surprisingly even if it’s a technology that crosses over to the mainstream.
The latest survey by the Pew Internet and American Life Project backs up that statement, noting that many Americans don’t know what in the bloody hell we’re talking about. The random phone study of more than 1,300 ‘Net users found that 91% don’t know what RSS is, 87% will give you a blank stare if you say “Podcasting” and – frighteningly – 70% never heard of “phishing.”
Lee Rainie, director of the study, calls it “a sobering reality check.”
