Shuttle delivers huge Webcast audience

NASA reports that nearly 433,000 people simultaneously watched its live space shuttle Webcast this week.

Instead of being surprised that many people watched a Webcast (which *is* amazing), we’re wondering what NASA was using to serve it up. Does it have Crays handling its Webcasts? That’s pretty wild.

The AP says the shuttle Webcast audience was more than twice the 175,000 peak audience AOL had for the July 2 Live 8 concerts. The 433,000 also quadruples a record for NASA set three weeks ago during Deep Impact’s encounter with the comet Tempel 1.

If you listen closely, you can hear online ad sales people across the U.S. pulling out their hair at the thought that no ads were sold or served for the shuttle Webcast. Hee hee.
