No sooner had we seen a commercial for Southwest’s new personalized air fare alert system than the Times ran a story on said system.
Basically, users download the app, Ding, from Southwest, and several times a day users will hear – you guessed it – a ding, which will notify them of cheap fares on the cattle herder airline. A Ding icon will also pop up on a user’s system tray. (Click the picture above for a screenshot.)
Now, being a complete net Nazi, the first thing we though was, “How will this affect corporate networks?” We can’t imagine net admins are gonna love their cheapo users getting Dinged several times a day x however many Dingers they have on the net. Plus, it’s a free third-party app – always fun for net wranglers.
Southwest’s Ding FAQ addresses the issues of CPU utilization, adware/spyware, net monitoring, personal info and more.
