Memo to school systems: Next time you want to sell used computer equipment make sure you have plenty of riot police on hand.
Yesterday, the Henrico County School System of Richmond, Va., held a public sale of 1,000 4-year-old used iBooks. About 1,000 people lined up at Richmond International Speedway to buy them and quickly stampeded when the gates opened.
According to the AP, people were thrown to the ground, beaten with a folding chair and nearly driven over. And, bonus: “One woman went so far as to wet herself than surrender her place in line.”
Well, they are iBooks, we’re not talkin’ junk from Dell here.
Inappropriate Quote of the Day honors go to Paul Proto, the county’s general services director: “But I think that people tend to get caught up in the excitement of the event – it almost has an entertainment value.”
If this is “almost,” we don’t want to know what Paul Proto thinks has true entertainment value.
