Retro gaming’s big comeback

The more things change, the more they stay the same. You can have your PSP, we’ll stick with our Atari 2600. That’s what many growing-older gamers are saying as they abandon CGI and slick graphics for the old days of the Pond paddle and Pitfall.

USA Today looks at the resurgence of classic ’80s gaming, from the $20 plug-and-play joystick units that were everywhere last Christmas season, to next month’s release of Atari’s latest retro console, Flashback 2, featuring Pong, Asteroids and Centipede.

“We are continuing to mine our vault,” Atari’s Wim Stock says. Atari shipped half a million units of the original Flashback and expects to ship 1 million units of Flashback 2.

Our prediction: Large boomboxes will make a comeback next.
