Flickr fans plan ‘symbolic suicide’

If you peruse friends’ pictures on the Web, chances are you’ve come across Flickr a time or two. It’s one of the most popular free picture-hosting sites, and earlier this year it was bought by Yahoo and moved from Canada to California.

Yahoo is forcing all Flickr users to create a Yahoo ID and join its network by 2006 or find their accounts deleted. The move is rankling some Flickrers, who have created a protest site, Flick Off, and promised a symbolic “mass suicide” of their accounts.

Such drama!

“If Flickr was honestly concerned about anything besides bank account size, then there would be zero point or purpose to force us into an account we did not originally agree to,” said Dana Smith, a San Francisco-based Flick Off supporter whose photographs rank among Flickr’s most interesting material.
