More on shuttering retail online sites

Last week we noted how Gap had surprisingly shuttered Gap.com and OldNavy.com for a total overhaul in preparation for the holiday shopping season.

Reader Larry S., who has a better memory than us, wrote us with a good observation: “You may remember that a few years back (2000), Wal-Mart made headlines by doing the same thing. IMO, the common thread here is that the percentage of Web sales to store sales is fairly insignificant. I can’t imagine Amazon.com doing such a thing!”

Sure enough, Larry was right and we even blew the dust off our archives to find the story.

Good point, Larry, thanks!
