Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang is defending his company’s decision to turn over a journalist’s personal e-mail information to the Chinese government, a move that critics say led to the man being convicted of state secrecy violatons and thrown in jail for 10 years.
Yang says the company had not choice but to turn over information relating to Shi Tao, a former writer for the financial publication Contemporary Business News, citing “a legal order.”
This is the same company that last year refused to turn over a dead soldier’s Yahoo account to the man’s family. Yahoo finally relented several months later.
