In the all eBay/Skype hubbub over the past week there’s been a lot of questioning of the deal, its intent and, especially, the price. Leave it to The Register to dig down into what truly matters – security.
Writer Scott Granneman takes a look at the security implications of the deal and notes that Skype is indeed cool, but the company has kept its code close to its vest. He says Skype uses a proprietary security protocol that, because it’s proprietary, no one has been able to verify independently. Then Granneman goes on to detail eBay’s concerning security issues and notes:
“So what do we have? Software that says it’s completely secure, but without a good way to verify that claim, now owned by a company that will basically give up an astonishing amount of personal information about you at the slightest peep from the authorities.”
A very good read, just skip the first 6 paragraphs, which are a boring aside.
