The Chicago Tribune reports that upscale new eatery Landmark sports a plush cell phone area off the main dining room, where patrons are requested to make or receive calls. “Patrons can chat away on a cushy leather banquette, surrounded by padded walls covered in faux leopard and snakeskin fabrics,” writes the paper. Sounds like a strip club.
Anyway, Landmark owners are sensitive to the disturbances cell phones can make in one’s dining experience, as well as to the fact they don’t want to shuttle their patrons into unkind Chicago weather to make or take calls.
“To have a ringing cell phone would be like bringing a camera crew into the dining room,” noted another Windy City restaurateur.
The Landmark’s move may well be an, um, landmark move as cell phones continue to worm their way into every waking moment of our day. As we noted last year, some restaurants are offering phone booths in which diners can make or take calls.
