We thought China couldn’t tighten ‘Net restrictions anymore than it has (aside from banning it all together), but we were wrong.
The country says only “healthy and civilized news and information that is beneficial to the improvement of the quality of the nation, beneficial to its economic development and conducive to social progress” will be accessible to its online citizens, which number 100 million. Only the U.S., with 135 million people online, has a greater Internet audience.
China’s edict to “standardize the management of news and information” available on the Web comes on the heels of last week’s release of Reporters Without Borders’ 87-page “Handbook for Bloggers and Cyber-Dissidents.” The handbook outlines how those in speech-restricted countries can use blogs, pseudonyms and anonymous proxies to get their message out.
