Bright had the, um, bright idea to create and offer free, downloadable copies of major metropolitan subway maps sized for iPod users. IPodSubwayMaps.com offers two dozen color guides to different systems around the world from Berlin to Washington, D.C., yet New York and San Francisco transit authorities have demanded their maps be removed.
NYC is demanding Bright pay $500 for a license to host and distribute a copy of the map – and he’s barred from making any money off it, not even to pay his license fee. The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) wants their maps removed because they claim they’re going to offer free downloadable maps on their site.
