Google has thrown its platinum-plated hat into the ring in a bid to provide the City of San Francisco with free Wi-Fi.
The search engine giant is competing with a dozen other bidders to offer free Internet access to the city, a project that tech-friendly Mayor Gavin Newsom hopes will eliminate the tech divide and get more people online.
If it wins the San Francisco project, pundits believe that will move the company that much closer to starting a nationwide Wi-Fi service. Over the weekend, Google spokesman Nate Tyler told the AP “the company doesn’t have any plans to offer a Wi-Fi service outside the San Francisco Bay area.”
“Unwiring San Francisco is a way for Google to support our local Bay Area community,” Tyler said.
