Opera takes on Firefox

Kick ’em when they’re down.

That’s the philosophy Opera is taking now that Firefox has suffered a wave of bad publicity. The lesser-known free open-source browser thinks the time is right to mount an attack on Firefox and steal its No. 2 position in browser share.

Two weeks ago Opera for the first time started offering an ad-free version of its browser, which it claims attracted more than 2 million downloads since Sept. 20.

Opera CEO Jon von Tetzchner says the software already has 10 million to 15 million users worldwide and he thinks it can increase its market share to 10% by the end of 2006 with a Mozilla-like grassroots PR campaign.
