If you’re in Italy and want to check your e-mail at an Internet cafe, bring your passport and prepare to be monitored.
The country has passed stiff new anti-terrorism laws, which include the monitoring and documentation of every person (local and tourist) who uses the ‘Net, or phone or fax services at public cafes.
Owners must photocopy everyone’s ID or passport, note the terminal they use and their log in and out times. Cafe proprietors must also purchase and install Web monitoring software and save a list of all sites visited by clients, then periodically turn this list into their local police.
Notes one cafe owner: “This is a waste of time. Terrorists don’t come to Internet cafes.”
