Just how big is PeopleSoft founder David Duffield’s proposed 72,000-square-foot “home”?
Pretty much bigger than you and I can imagine. SF Chronicle columnist Carol Lloyd walks around her neighborhood and estimates a three-story Casa de Duffield would swallow up 18 house lots. If it were one floor, make that 32 lots.
If you missed the story a couple of weeks ago, Duffield wants to build his behemoth east of San Francisco in Alamo, a plan which is irking his well-heeled future neighbors.
“As people have said,” says Bruce Smith, whose family created the Bryan Ranch community where the proposed home would be built, “by day, it is a mass on the hillside. By night, it would be a cruise ship.”
Notes architectural historian Mitchell Schwarzer: “It just illustrates a kind of crass desire for living large. It’s architectural gluttony.”
It’s also very 1998.
