Cingular got a lot of mileage yesterday out of their announcement that customers will be able to access their AOL, Yahoo and Hotmail accounts via cell phone.
It’s not quite the technological breakthrough the mainstream media made it out to be, so we figure it must have been a slow news day.
Regardless, the wireless provider said subscribers will be able to access their e-mail via several Motorola and Samsung models. Company big wigs said there’s no charge for the service, but users would need to sign up for one of their wireless ‘Net plans. A $5 monthly data plan should provide sufficient capacity to check one’s e-mail a few times daily,” noted VP Jim Ryan. Well, that sounds like less-than-a-free service to us.
However, everyone has overlooked the real story: What’s the use of being able to check your e-mail if you can’t get a signal? It is Cingular, after all.
