A 21-year-old hacker was sentenced to nearly five years in the federal pokey for taking control of 400,000 PCs and renting them out to spammers and hackers.
Well, at least that’s pretty imaginative. For the hacker who’s too lazy to maintain his own zombie network, just rent one.
Jeanson James Ancheta of Downey, Calif., pled guilty to four felony charges. Among those machines he borrowed were those belonging to the China Lake Naval Air Facility and the Defense Information System Agency. Yikes.
Noted U.S. District Judge R. Gary Klausner at the sentencing hearing: “Your worst enemy is your own intellectual arrogance that somehow the world cannot touch you on this.”
With that quality, Ancheta sounds like the perfect future help desk staffer.
