Times slams AmericanIdol.com

If you think the fantastically popular TV show American Idol is cheesy, wait until you see the Web site.

That’s what The New York Times says, in a scathing review titled “American Idol’ Online as a Sociological Study.” That’s a pretty fancy-schmancy headline for such a hatchet job.

But, honestly, has the paper never watched the show? What did it expect: IETF.org?

Critic Virginia Heffernan skewers the site, calling it “a hyperactive value-add for fans of the juggernaut franchise,” “a patchy light board of miscellaneous trimmings meant to pad, embellish and gild the ‘American Idol” phenomenon,’ and “inoffensive and sporadically entertaining.” Oh, man, that’s our Layer 8 mission statement. And to top off the skewering, Heffernan compares AI.com to instant macaroni and cheese.

Click here for an unintentionally hilarious read. But what we really want to know is how the show finally snagged the AmericanIdol.com domain? For the past four years, it has been stuck with IdolOnFox.com. That’s the story we want to read.
