Whoever was screening ringtones at Cingular is probably looking for a new job as a tone stereotyping illegal immigrants was discovered for sale on the carrier’s Web site.
The unnamed tone “started with a siren, followed by a male voice saying in a Southern drawl, ‘This is la Migra, [slang for Border Patrol] and continued, ‘Por favor, put the oranges down and step away from the cell phone. I repeat-o, put the oranges down and step away from the telephone-o. I’m deporting you back home-o.’ ”
Available for $2.40, the AP reports the ringtone has been available on Cingular’s site since late February or early March and was downloaded eight times. Cingular has removed the tone from sale and is “reviewing the process used to screen ringtones.”
