We haven’t had a good illegal download ridiculous lawsuit story in a while, so this hits the spot.
The ever-litigious Motion Picture Association of America has sued a 67-year-old Wisconsin grandfather over the illegal downloading of four movies (“The Incredibles,””I, Robot,” “The Grudge,” and “The Forgotten”) over iMesh. Fred Lawrence says he doesn’t even like movies and that his 12-year-old grandson downloaded them.
“First of all, like I say, I guess I’d have to plead being naive about the whole thing,” he said. “I personally didn’t do it, and I wouldn’t do it. But I don’t think it was anything but an innocent mistake my grandson made.”
We tend to believe grandpa didn’t know what was up, but how many 12-year-olds who are savvy enough to go to the trouble of downloading a movie and not knowing it’s wrong?
The MPAA offered to settle the issue if Lawrence paid them $4,000. He refused and now the Moneygrubbing Picture Association of America is suing him for up to $600,000 in damages. Hey, someone’s gotta pay for Tom Cruise’s lattes. They don’t grow on trees.
