While Google and book publishers are locking horns over the company’s book-scanning initiative, Amazon.com has snuck into the fray, announcing an iTunes-like pricing scheme for book-buying.
Amazon Pages, set to debut next year, will allow customers to buy individual book pages for a few cents each. Another service, Amazon Upgrade, will offer full online access when a traditional text is purchased; for example, a $20 may cost $1.99 to read online.
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos says copyright holders would determine whether the pages could be printed or downloaded, thereby sidestepping the thorny copyright issue at the heart of the Google/publishing fracas.
