The cable network that revolutionized sports is now branching out into wireless with the launch of the ESPN cell phone, aka Mobile ESPN.
Teaming with Sanyo and Sprint Nextel, the phone will deliver a steady stream of scores, highlights, news, trivia and “full games shrunk to one-fifteenth or one-twentieth their usual TV size” to accommodate the 2.1-inch screen.
“What’s next, implants?” asks Keith Olbermann, former “SportsCenter” anchor who never should have left to go to MSNBC.
In a time of free phones and increasingly cheaper service, Mobile ESPN will be top-shelf. The phone is selling in four test markets at Best Buy for $399.99 after a $100 rebate; monthly service will rangle from $64.99 to $224.99.
