Some New Jersey Orthodox Jews are unplugging the ‘Net in their homes at the order of rabbis who say it’s a bad influence on children.
Students in any of the 43 private Jewish schools in the Lakewood, N.J., area can be suspended or expelled if found to live in a home with ‘Net access.
“Kids can become addicted to the point where it’s almost like a drug addiction or an alcoholic addiction,” notes Rabbi Moshe Weisberg. “Even though there might be some value – research, schoolwork – the negatives so far outweigh the positives.”
The community’s rabbis and yeshiva principals have made an exception for parents who only access e-mail or run home businesses. They may have a ‘Net connection but must keep the computer in a locked room or cabinet.
