The NYPD is deploying wireless video cameras on Manhattan streets to fight crime.

Following the lead of other major cities such as London, Chicago and Washington, the city hopes to set up 500 cameras throughout the city in the $9 million project.

The cameras are mounted on lamp posts, about 30 feet above street level, and are equipped with zoom lenses.

And, of course, privacy wonks have their panties in a bunch:

“The department ‘is installing cameras first and asking questions later,’ said Donna Lieberman, executive director the New York Civil Liberties Union. “
