When a contestant gets the boot on American Idol this season, the show has played a video retrospective of the singer’s time on the show set to the song “Bad Day” by Daniel Powter. The exposure on the No. 1 show sent the previously unknown song’s sales through the roof, making it the No. 1 download on iTunes and, conceivably, a ton of money for Apple and the record label.

So the American Idol Powers That Be, no slouches they, are now offering 99-cent audio and $1.99 video downloads of songs performed by the show’s contestants but, cagily, are bypassing iTunes and offering them for purchase from AmericanIdol.com.

Smart move for the Idol people. But we’re still dying to know what they had to do to finally secure the rights to americanidol.com after four years of being stuck with idolonfox.com.
