Google shuts down Brazilian social net communities

At the request of the Brazilian government, Google has agreed to shut down some communities on its unbelievably popular Orkut social networking site.

Government officials are concerned after some site communities have been linked to drug-dealing operations and organized fights.

The real story here is that Orkut boasts about 8 million users, representing 25% of all Brazilians who have access to the Internet. Wow, those are, like, American Idol finale numbers. But what we really want to know is what “Orkut” means.
