Verizon is breaking ranks with its wireless brethren when it comes to the dreaded early-termination fee.
The company says it will let customers break their contract and prorate the $175 fee so they only have to pay an amount proportionate to the time left on their contract. We hope they prorate fairly, instead of something like, “If you have anything more than 1 month left on the contract, fork over $175. If you have a month or less left, it’s $169.”
Experts say the move is a relatively safe one for Verizon, which has the industry’s best customer retention rates. Regardless, it’s a good move. But perhaps not a totally magnanimous one as Verizon and Sprint are facing a class-action suit in California centering around…drum roll please …early termination fees.
