Montclair State University officials have rolled out an interesting new feature for freshmen – cell phones that track their whereabouts.
The cell phone is mandatory, but the GPS feature is voluntary. It’s another way universities are coping with decreased revenue from dorm room landlines – offering cell phone service instead.
Many are offering special features, sure as school-related alerts and reminders, the ability to track school shuttle buses, safety features and more.
“The landline probably will be obsolete in five years or so, and we want to be in the forefront of new technology,” said Frederick Siff, University of Cincinnati chief information officer. “Students don’t carry laptops around constantly, but they always have their cell phones.”
