Wired looks at the Jack FM radio phenomena in which stations dump their music focus and DJs, and basically put their whole collection on shuffle.
The format is taking hold in major markets across the country, despite the fact that it “can sometimes feel like you’re listening to a middle-aged couple spinning favorites from their LP collection,” writes Dave Demerjian. “It’s like listening to a middle-aged drunkard’s iPod set to shuffle.”
Regardless, that drunkard is reaping big rewards and ratings for stations who are adopting the format. Stats report conventional radio is getting hit big with the double whammy of iPods and satellite radio.
