Wal-Mart’s tries to steal MySpace thunder

Who’s the absolute last company that should ever launch a social networking site for teens?

Wal-Mart!

However, the retail giant has launched what AdAge calls a “highly sanitized, controlled and rather unhip site” called The Hub. Aimed at teens returning to school this fall, The Hub encourages youth to make their own pages and, no doubt, yak about how much they love stuff from Wal-Mart.

We’ll also add “offensive” to the list of site adjectives, as you find one of the sample pages featuring “teen-ager” Beth, who in a strapless prom dress writes: “I’ll school my way by looking hot in my Wal-Mart clothes to school to catch a cute boy’s eye. …”

First, that’s offensive to the female gender. Second, no one looks hot in Wal-Mart clothes.
