Kentucky basketball fans have gotten the school in trouble by posting comments on a recruit’s blog.
Patrick Patterson is a highly-touted senior power forward from West Virginia who has Kentucky on his short list. Rabid Kentucky basketball fans found Patterson’s MySpace page and started leaving comments urging him to choose UK.
Some even posted pictures and “accompanying text implied that a sexual wonderland awaits a top Kentucky basketball player.”
The fans unwittingly violated NCAA recruiting rules and the university intends to report the violations – thereby turning itself in – to the NCAA.
“The NCAA is pretty strict: There’s four people who are allowed to have contact with a recruit, and those are the coaches on the basketball staff,” noted school spokesman Scott Stricklin. “I think it’s the kind of thing where if it continued unabated, a school could get in some serious jeopardy because it would be the same as a booster walking up and having continual conversations or phone contacts with a recruit.”
