Lately AOL is having a Dell of a time.
First there’s the whole giving-everything-away plan.
Then there’s the fact it won’t let customers cancel their accounts.
Now AOL has breached the privacy of its 26 remaining subscribers by releasing three months’ worth of search queries on the ‘Net. (Ed. – Technically, it was the search history of 658,000 U.S. customers.)
“This was a screw-up and we’re angry and upset about it,” AOL said in an e-mailed statement. “It was an innocent enough attempt to reach out to the academic community with new research tools but it was obviously not appropriately vetted and if it had been, it would have been stopped in an instant.”
Yes, but it wasn’t.
What AOL was innocently up to is detailed here.
