The death of Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin hit many hard, including Aussie Web servers. Irwin’s death was a top news story worldwide and millions made the virtual trip Down Under to get the latest details. Hitwise reports Irwin-related sites www.crocodilehunter.com) saw huge traffic spikes earlier this week, and some news sites – including the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) – had to shut down due to the traffic load. Many sites were forced to serve low-bandwidth pages or grind to a halt. ABC reports Web measurement company Hitwise says Irwin’s death was the biggest news event read by Australians on the internet since two Australian miners were trapped by a mine collapse in southern Tasmania state in late April.
