YouTube alleges editorial integrity

YouTube gets roughly a bazillion hits each day, so being on its home page means your video of your cat falling into the toilet will attract many an eyeball. But how does YouTube choose the spotlighted videos? The company is “opaque” about the selection criteria, according to MediaShift. However, YouTube marketing insists the Featured Video slots are not paid, but chosen by a “editorial team [that] scours the site for the most entertaining, novel and unique content and they are the ones who decide which videos get featured.” That’s so quaint. And, most likely, a fib unless YouTube’s got a magic money tree in its cafeteria.
