According to a Register story today Cirrus Logic is developing Gigabit Ethernet audio chips that will enable customers employing products with the chips to send hundred of uncompressed audio streams simultaneously over a single wire. The notion is to let enable heavyweight audio users to aggregate as many as 600 or 700 sound channels onto a single connection. Customers for such products might include theatres, theme parks or some really large Cadillac Escalades (ok maybe a Chevy Suburban). Current Cirrus products support 100Mbs switched Ethernet, and support 64 channels.
