If you want to keep your personal data private and your guns out of the wrong hands don’t ever give either of them to the FBI. A Washington Post story today tells of the bureau’s recent audit performed by the Justice Department Inspector General: 160 laptop computers were lost or stolen in less than four years, including at least 10 that contained sensitive or classified information – one of which held “personal identifying information on FBI personnel. In the same report the FBI said it had lost the same number, 160 , of guns including shotguns and submachine guns.
Um, the good news is that this was an IMPROVEMENT.
In a similar audit in 2002, the Justice Dept. said 354 weapons and 317 laptops were lost or stolen at the FBI over about two years. Sounds kind of ridiculous until you realize the FBI maintains more than 52,000 weapons and 26,000 laptops, according to the report. Still, the report’s findings border on the absurd for a group entrusted with so much security detail.
