Arnold Schwarzenegger isn’t usually the model spokesperson for anything green, most certainly cars. But the Governor of California is trying to change or at least modify that image.
Schwarzenegger appeared yesterday on MTV to promote Earth Day with an 800-horsepower car that runs on renewable biodiesel fuel. The Terminator appeared on a special Earth Day episode of “Pimp My Ride.” For the show, mechanics installed the powerful engine in a converted 1965 Chevy Impala, producing a vehicle that accelerates from zero to 60 mph in three seconds – pretty impressive stuff for a non-traditional engine. The governor told the AP that the converted car’s emissions of greenhouse gases will be 50% lower than a comparable gas-powered car. And biodiesel fuel can be made from recycled products such as vegetable oil. “We take this cool show and they did something, and added something that was environmentally hip,” Schwarzenegger said. Schwarzenegger has in the past been mostly associated with the gas guzzling Hummer. He owns four of the monsters but has converted two of them to run on alternative fuels, he said. But Arnold can’t escape his Hummer past. Arianna Huffington, a candidate for California Governor, has launched a three-minute Flash movie featuring a drag race between her economical hybrid vehicle and Arnold’s gas-guzzling yellow Hummer. At first, it appears Arnold will win, but he has to keep stopping for gas. He even gets help from President Bush with a can of foreign oil, according to this site. It’s done in a humorous, South Park style with the usual Arnold one liners.
