Including object-based storage
Dell last week unveiled its object storage architecture which identifies, stores and manages unstructured data.
Dell to introduce cloud turnkey products
Called the Dell DX Object Storage Solution, the architecture stores the storage objects in a flat address space that can be searched for retrieval and used for archiving a variety of digital content.
The DX Object Storage Solution assigns metadata references to data and can manage the data from its creation through deletion.
It uses a wizard-like setup and self-healing technology. As nodes are added or removed to/from to the architecture, their contents are absorbed dynamically into a global file system, allowing scalability of the system to billions of files and petabytes of storage and avoiding forklift upgrades as the system grows.
Each node in the DX Object Storage Solution is based on industry-standard hardware.
Dell is developing an SDK that its partners can work with to integrate their software. Among current Dell partners are CommVault, EMC, Iron Mountain, Bridgehead Software, Monnwalk, Symantec and StoredIQ among others.
The target audience for the DX Object Storage Solution is healthcare IT, e-Discovery, content management and file and e-mail archiving.
The company also introduced the Dell/EMC DD Series backup-to-disk hardware/software packages that include deduplication based on Data Domain technology. The Data Domain appliances will be rebadged as the Dell|EMC DD140, DD610 and DD630. And, the company also announced that it has added source-level deduplication capability to its PowerVault DL2100 Powered by Symantec Backup Exec 2010 and snapshot capability to its PowerVault DL2100 Powered by CommVault Simpana 8 platform.
In addition, Dell will begin using EMC’s Celerra-based network-attached storage, the Dell/EMC NS Series. These NAS appliances are the NS-120, NS-480 and NS-960. The company also unveiled the PowerVault NX3100, a NAS appliance that can handle both block and file data.
