AMD announced on Monday the combination of its six-core Opteron processor with AMD Chipset platform and graphics processing unit into a server platform code-named Kroner. The very low power twin server design specification offers additional platform elements such as voltage regulation and the ability to remotely set power caps and improve performance of virtualization and HPC workloads with PCI Express 2.0, HyperTransport 3 technology and advanced AMD Virtualization and AMD-P features, including AMD’s IO Virtualization Technology support. Blade, rack and tower configurations are expected to be available in coming weeks from server infrastructure providers including Tyan, Supermicro, Microway and ZT Systems.
