The 451 Group on Thursday reported that the server and desktop virtualization software marketplace will grow nearly 400% over the next five years to reach more than $10 billion in 2013. The 451 Group expects a rebounding economy, hardware refresh and increased adoption of virtualization to drive the market from $2.8 billion in 2009 to $10.5 billion in 2013. This is supported by recent Gartner findings that only about 16% of current workloads are virtualized. While hypervisor software is becoming increasingly commoditized, revenue from support tool products will more than make up for lower unit costs at the hypervisor level. The 451 Group’s Virtualization Software Market Monitor tracks more than 115 vendors and segment revenue in 12 market subsectors.
