RNA Networks on Tuesday announced its views of the top three trends in memory virtualization in 2010. Since memory utilization is a major factor in application performance, the ability to virtualize memory across multiple machines is advantageous. First, local memory is much faster than storage memory, including solid state drives, because of its application awareness, so as applications run short on memory, a large bottleneck occurs. Second, increases in data requirements outstrip the memory of a single server, even with advances in DRAM density. The ability to share memory across a network of processors provides a cost-effective answer. Third, the ability to virtualize memory is a critical factor in cloud computing, allowing service providers to efficiently scale processing requirements across a virtual memory pool.
