* IBM rolls out initiatives to help customers design cost-effective data centers

IBM last week announced a number of data center services that enable customers to identify requirements, current capabilities and capacities in the design of their data centers.

The services, which are available from IBM’s Site and Facilities Services unit, are:

* A High Density Computing Readiness Assessment, which assists customers in gauging their ability to support high-density computing.

* A thermal analysis, which identifies and resolves health-related issues in existing data centers and recommends power savings.

* A high-density rack system for the data center.

* A data center consolidation and relocation service, which provides an evaluation and plans to help customers consolidate and relocate data centers.

* A scalable modular data center for small and midsize businesses, which lets customers install a new data center quickly from modular building blocks.

IBM claims it has 450 Site and Facilities experts who have designed and built 30 million square feet of raised data center floors for its customers.

The unit offers capabilities in four areas: Data Center and Facilities Strategy Services; IT Facilities Assessment, Design and Construction Services; IT Facilities Consolidation and Relocation Services; and Specialized Facilities Services.

The Data Center and Facilities Strategy Services identify data center requirements, current capabilities and capacities, and define power-saving and high-resiliency options. The IT Facilities Assessment, Design and Construction Services help customers build new or upgraded data centers. The IT Facilities Consolidation and Relocation Services help customers save money and reduce redundancy in data center designs by consolidation and reducing redundancy globally. Finally, the Specialized Facilities Services help customers design and build eco-friendly buildings, clean rooms and trading floors.

All services are available immediately and can be purchased as part of IBM’s CoolBlue portfolio of tools.
