The AP reports this morning that cases of Meals Ready to Eat possibly meant for hurricane victims have become “Meals-Ready-for-eBay.”

MRE auctions are popping up on eBay, with some sellers claiming to be from the Gulf Coast states hit hardest by Hurricane Katrina. The feds say they can’t prove where the MREs were distributed or who they were originally meant for.

“If it’s true, that’s pretty reprehensible,” said Cheryl Guidry Tyiska, deputy director of the National Organization of Victim Assistance. “There are a lot of pretty hungry people down there who could use the food for free.”

The Homeland Security Department’s inspector general has asked investigators to examine the MRE auctions. MREs are clearly stamped “not for resale.” eBay only prohibits the sale of expired MREs, unless they are “advertised as a collector’s item.” Ew, now that’s a weird hobby.
