So Microsoft takes the somewhat cool code name of Longhorn and changes it to the wussy official product name, Vista. And if that weren’t bad enough, it turns out Vista is already the name of several products and services, including one software company.
Sounds like a Dreamworks situation here.
Anyway, Microsoft claims it did all its homework before applying for the trademark “Windows Vista,” but the AP reports the brand name also is sported on “a line of sewing machines, an elevator monitoring system, [and] even a brand of detergent used to clean dairy equipment,” not to mention other software.
“It seems like they were a little lax in their intellectual property due diligence – maybe because they’re so big, maybe because they’re so powerful, maybe because they feel they can do anything they want,” said James T. Berger, a marketing communications consultant.
Whoa, whoa, whoa. Microsoft use its size and power to roll over smaller companies? Mr. Berger, you’ve got the wrong company, sir!
