Steve Jobs says some music companies are pressuring him to raise the price of single songs bought via iTunes.
Jobs – wisely – is resisting, noting that a price hike would push many people currently buying music back into P2P piracy. He also says music companies are already making a greater profit selling songs for 99 cents via iTunes than via the traditional retail CD route.
“So if they want to raise the prices it just means they’re getting a little greedy,” Jobs notes. “We’re trying to compete with piracy, we’re trying to pull people away from piracy and say, ‘You can buy these songs legally for a fair price.’ But if the price goes up a lot, they’ll go back to piracy. Then everybody loses.”
