Sony issues patch for DRM rootkit

Sony really stepped in it earlier this week when users discovered the company’s music CDs installed hidden digital rights management files on Windows PCs without a person’s consent or knowledge.

Not only was the move underhanded, it also made it very easy to screw up your system, requiring an entire OS reinstall, reported bloggers. F-Secure issued a release and detailed info here.

Sony is now trying to backpedal since it’s been found out and has issued a patch to reveal the hidden anti-piracy software.

You can download a program to “safely uninstall all the software by visiting the Sony BMG Web site,” writes USA Today. However, The Register reports the patch won’t remove the rootkit DRM, but rather makes the previous hidden files visible.
